Kerala resident doctor found dead in medical college hostel
A 32-year-old junior resident doctor from Kerala was found dead under suspicious circumstances at a medical college in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur on Friday. Police said no suicide note was found so far.
Dr Abisho David was found dead in his hostel room of the BRD Medical College in the morning when a staffer came to check on him. Dr David was a third-year postgraduate student and a junior resident doctor in the anaesthesia department.
The incident came to light when anaesthesia department head Dr Satish Kumar sent a staffer to check on Dr David after he failed to report on time on Friday. When the staffer went to his hostel room in the boys’ hostel, the door was locked from the inside. Even after repeated knocks and calls, Dr David did not open the door. Suspecting something amiss, the staffer alerted Dr Kumar, who then arrived at the hostel accompanied by other staff members.
When all efforts to open the door failed, the team forcibly entered the room, breaking the door. Inside, Dr David was found lying motionless on his bed. He was declared dead at the scene.
The college administration and local authorities were immediately informed. Principal Dr Ramkumar Jaiswal, senior faculty and resident doctors reached the hostel soon after.
Gulriha police arrived on the scene, took possession of the body and sent it for postmortem. A forensic team was also sent to collect evidence from the room.
While there is speculation that a suicide note may have been recovered from the room, police officials have denied finding any such document, saying that no suicide note was recovered so far. The lack of clarity has only intensified the mystery surrounding Dr David’s death.
Dr David was regarded as a dedicated and soft-spoken professional by peers and faculty. His sudden and unexplained death has cast a pall of mourning over the campus, leaving students and staff in shock.
“Whether the death was natural or a case of suicide remains uncertain at this point,” said Dr Kumar. “The situation appears suspicious, and we are fully cooperating with police and forensic teams. Only the postmortem report and forensic analysis will reveal the actual cause.”
Principal Dr Ramkumar Jaiswal expressed deep sorrow over the incident and assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted. “We will examine every aspect, be it related to the department, hostel life or personal challenges, to understand if any mental pressure or external factor played a role,” he said.
Police said they were treating the case with the utmost seriousness and are considering all possibilities. Residents of the hostel and fellow doctors are being questioned to help reconstruct the sequence of events.
